The glorious ultra passion red when you mix it with white, you get the colour pink. Such a colour has been synonymous with beauty, love, and happiness. It signals the feeling of hope and comfort. When someone asks you ‘how your day is going’ or ‘how you feel at the moment’, you sometimes utter the phrase, “in the pink of health.” And there you get the message. The wondrous world of pink was heightened even more with the release of the film, ‘Barbie’ in the summer of 2023. I got to watch the said film in the heat of the summer. And I’m glad I did. I even wore a matching pink blouse and skirt to celebrate the pink spirit. At first, I didn’t have much expectations. Except, of course, I appreciate the fact that the film was directed by the very talented, award-winning director, Greta Gerwig and joined by a host of wonderful actors and actresses, led by Margot Robbie and Canadian actor, Ryan Gosling.
My first impression was that the movie has so much commercial appeal and I wasn’t sure how it would evolve to bring out value or inspiration to the movie-goers. You know the thought about the kid’s toys and dolls. Anyway, I thought as long as the movie can make me laugh, I’m all for it. To my surprise, the movie is not just, after all, about laughs and all that. There’s something to it. The movie was successful in being able to bring out some thought-provoking, heart-warming messages. America Ferreira was so outstanding in her monologue. Kudos to her! She certainly deserved to be nominated for the Oscar, along with the actor, Ryan Gosling. I was rooting for the two of them in the recently concluded 2024 Oscar Awards. And even though the Barbie movie did not take home the major Oscar awards, [except for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) by Finneas O'Connell, Billie Eilish for the song "What Was I Made For?”] to me the people behind the movie are winners themselves (in their own right). During the Oscar night, I am especially amazed by the fascinating performance of Ryan Gosling. And I certainly agree (perhaps, along with other Barbie fans), that Ryan was stunning, funny, and entertaining with that musical number ('I'm Just Ken') he performed (during the 2024 Oscar Awards night). Congratulations!
